Rationale for Development of Parenting Program using
Play is the Way
Teachers and parents working together
to help develop in children a lasting sense of wellbeing
through considerate and considered behaviour
and understanding and management of emotions.
- There are differences between the school and home as organized structures. When we visit a school, there is little difference between what happens from classroom-to-classroom and even school-to-school. But visit ten homes and there will marked differences in what is happening in each. Each family will have its own routines, ways of communicating and interacting with members. Parenting styles and beliefs will differ also. This parenting program is to help what happens in the home and at school become more similar and familiar for children.
- The main theme for Play is the Way is an invitation to adults in children's lives to change the way they interact with children (what they say, how they speak and things they do).
- Most of the ideas presented in Play is the Way can be grouped. As an educational program it is useful to be able to also sequence the groupings.
- As well as talking within a group setting (conversation, dialogue, discussion, Q&A), parents would probably appreciate hard copy of the material presented to take home. The ideas presented would also benefit from being broadened with strategies that parents could put into practice.
