Gurung-Birang Support Unit
Londonderry Public School is proud to offer a dedicated Support Unit, comprising three Multicategorical (MC) classes designed to meet the diverse learning and wellbeing needs of students with diagnosed disabilities.
Known as Gurung Birang, meaning "children belong", our Support Unit reflects our commitment to inclusion, support, and a strong sense of belonging for every child. We provide a nurturing and inclusive environment where students are supported to reach their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
What are Support Unit classes?
A Support Unit class offers a personalised approach to learning, tailored to meet the individual needs of our students. Class sizes are smaller to allow for targeted support, and each class is supported by a teacher and a School Learning Support Officer (SLSO) to ensure students receive the assistance they require.
Class sizes
In support units, classes are generally smaller than those in mainstream settings to provide more targeted and individualised support. This is essential in meeting the higher learning and wellbeing needs of our students.
At Londonderry Public School, our three Multicategorical (MC) classes each have a maximum of seven students, allowing staff to deliver personalised learning programs and make appropriate adjustments to support every child’s individual needs. Our small class settings ensure that both academic and social-emotional development are prioritised in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.
Teaching Staff
Each support class is staffed by a teacher and a School Learning Support Officer (SLSO). Class teachers work closely with parents, carers, and relevant professionals to develop personalised learning plans that reflect each student’s individual needs and goals.
Opportunities
While students in our Support Unit benefit from a specialised learning environment, they also have the opportunity to participate in activities with their peers in mainstream classes, helping to build social connections and support inclusion within the wider school community.
They may also have access to:
- Transition support teachers
- Specialist provisions, including NESA disability provisions for exams
- Transport assistance through the Assisted School Travel Program (if eligible)
- Itinerant support teachers for hearing or vision needs
Where appropriate, students may also take part in learning activities within mainstream classes, depending on their personalised support needs and available resources.
How can my child be placed in a Support Unit class?
The process begins by speaking with your child’s current school or pre-school about their needs. They will guide you through determining eligibility and whether this support is suitable.
To apply:
- Your child must meet the Department’s disability criteria and have significant support needs.
- A collaborative application, called an Access Request, is completed—usually by the school’s learning and support team.
- A local placement panel reviews the application and determines the outcome.
If you would like more information about eligibility or how to apply for placement in one of our support classes, please contact the school office for guidance.
